Overview

The base guide is an evergreen reference guide for all things legendary weapons. What’s the lingo, parts in detail, how to aquire a new LI.

Afterwards a few related system that will help you with all the leveling and grinding for your eternal weapons.

Currency and terms

Nearly all legendary items have longwinded names that get shortened. While leveling you won’t need them as much, but for clarity we’lll discuss them first.

image

Ancient script is the main barter currency for all things LI. This works the same as marks, ember, motes, quest tokens.

You can get them mostly from disenchanting older items, reward track (see later) or boxes. Beware of the 10.000 cap

https://lotro-wiki.com/wiki/Item:Ancient_Script

Tracery tokens are an expansion specific barter token to get a specific tracery of your choice of the quality teal or gold (with an extra ancient script cost

Usually these are given in long or Epic quest chains. These also comes as rewards for harder festival quests.

Heraldic tracery

Traceries are the gems you socket into each slot of your LI. These come in a large variety. They consist of 2 parts. A stat part and a skill part.

  • Stat part can be upgraded by increasing the level of the slot itself with runes (see below)
  • Skill part can be upgrade by slotting a higher quality version in the same slot (yellow, purple, teal, gold)

The tracery works in a specific level range. After that is gets disabled. Overwrite it with a new one.

Runes of enchantment are little items that are used to upgrade the stat part of a tracery. They come in +1 (yellow), +2 (purple), +3 (teal) and +4 (gold) level upgrade per use. More levels = more stats.

One thing to note is they upgrade the slot. Not the specific tracery. If you replace the tracery it get the upgraded amount of stats

runes of enchantment

A few other terms you’ll come across in short are

  • Tracery room (barter room in rivendell for all LI things (see Tracery room directions)
  • Appraisal – a way to get a large quantity of new LI currencies from your old LI (see Appraisal)
  • Word of power, Word of craft, Heraldic tracery – different type of traceries (see LI in detail)
  • Legendary reward track, reward track or LI track – a seasonal LI, cosmetic or other item “battle pass”.
  • LI runes – The old legendary xp runes that can now be used for the LI track. Not to be confused with runes of enchantment
  • 101 box – a specific box from the reward track you can repeatably get. Only unlimited source of ancient script.

  • Red for offensive

  • yellow for support

Variations of them boost single target, aoe or bleeds. Or protect against melee, range or tactical. Upgrades work the same as word of mastery.

You will eventually unlock a total of 5 or 6 slots. You can only slot 1 of every specific Word of power.

Heraldic tracery only provide stats, but in a larger quantity then the other traceries. They come in an offensive variant and a defensive variant.

Later in an expansion (so far 1 time) there will be special version of the classic ones that can work together with words of craft to provide 2 extra set bonus ones.

Heraldic tracery
word of craft

The same as heraldic traceries, but less stats. However some of these have the option for a set bonus.

While the 4-set bonus is a rating. The 2-set bonus can a % crit chance, damage type. Especially later in an expansion the % bonusses are preferred.

In contrary to the name, the normal version can’t be crafted.

Getting a new LI

This can be bartered fresh in the tracery room or with the Moria epic quest in Eregion Echad Dunnan epic quest

Epic quest

The Moria epic quest in Eregion Echad Dunnan epic quest will introduce you to several aspects and slowly give you each item you’ll need for your first LI. Follow the Prologue in Rivendell or talk to Rathwald south of Rivendell in Eregion (bottom right) in Echad dunnan. The dwarf in front of the portal. Complete all or the main quests inside there and complete the Watcher story instance. You’ll finish with both LI for your class and several traceries.

Replacing your current old LI or making a new one

Step 1 – Visit the Tracery room (see below) in Rivendell to barter 2 LI’s for 200 Ancient script each.

Step 2 – Reforge your LI to match your current level
If you have leveled past 45 or grabbed a new base LI you will need to reforge your LI’s. This will take it to your current level’s power. This can be done every 5 levels (50/55/60 etc). This will open more sockets for traceries and higher dps/healing.

Step 3 – Getting traceries for your LI
You will need traceries to fill out your LI’s sockets. The way you get these is dependent on the quality of the tracery you’re looking for. In general yellow or purple traceries are more than enough as you’re leveling.

If you’re getting them after Appraisal and got all the barter currency already. You can visit the tracery room in Rivendell. One very important part of getting these traceries is to not blow the full appraisal budget by getting everything Teal. You won’t have enough ancient script for that.

Grab a mix of rare and a few teal traceries that closely resembles your current legacies. Any legacy that could be considered a boost to all skills is replaced by a Word of Mastery.

If you’re a dps class or healing focus on getting teal Word of mastery and purple Word of power.. For tanking or other non-dps/healing legacies such as – cooldown on a vital skill focus on teal version of those and get rare Word of Mastery.

Words of crafting can be done later or grab any cheap ones for now.

Step 4 – Slotting your new traceries
You will need to work in the “essence socket panel”. This is opened by dragging the LI over on the flame icon or Shift-double left click on the LI . You can then drag the tracery over to one the twinkling sockets. Repeat this till all slots or traceries you have are filled.

Legendary item reward track

By pressing Shift-I you will open the Legendary item reward track. Any item experience from quests, mobs or xp runes will advance this. Once you have filled up a level you can claim the reward. These start off small with boxes of ancient script and runes. But will get more interesting with traceries, embers and even fragmented teal or gold barter tokens.

Once you’ve reached level 100 (very easily with normal playtime in season 1). You can keep repeating level 101 which in season 1 awards 50 ancient scripts.

LI track
