General gear advice

There are plenty of different sources, but none provide the variety we’re used to on the later expansion where each raid has a different armour set for each class and traitline. As such it’s hard to provide 1 advice that would work for all. In general, if you want to focus on the Rift raid, it’s hard to beat the stats + shadow damage mitigation. Same with Wraiths.

If you’re looking for DPS gear or your main class role. You;ll be able to find cheap sources and most set bonuses are meant for you. If you’re looking for a variant, you’ll have to mix and match different sources if you want the best.

There are options such as the level 50 landscape drop set armour, Nadhin armour with max essence slots or seasonal instances such as Thrang. Or specific boss and class/traitline drops out there that are better than the easily to reasonably sourced gear pieces. But this guide is not made to provide min-max information on that detailed level.

First character to level 50

In general, quest armour is fine to start off with. You can go 2 ways.

  1. Cheap upgrades (solo or quick to aquire
    1. Annuminas Barter armour + Skirmish camp or crafted jewellery
    2. Angmar instance armour + Skirmish camp or crafted jewellery
  2. Prepared upgrades
    1. Crafted or Angmar instance armour + select mission jewellery
    2. New scaled instance drops + single use crafted jewellery

You prepare your level 50 gear by getting the required rep on missions barters before hitting 50, or join Urugarth and Carn Dum run before you hit level 50. You’ll get a ton of crafting cases with scrolls before 50. You’ll miss out on quest areas and epic story by going with these options, but you won’t “waste” time once you hit 50.

Second character or kin/friends

For a future character you’ll have marks and medallions or the barter item to skip straight to the good stuff. You might even have some Rift gems to barter, mission tokens galore. If it’s later in the servers lifetime you or a friend might have guild items, crafted gear, stocked up on bind to account offhands and Wraith Jewelry in your vault.

Just cause it’s not the best for your first character. Remember to check your barter wallet, vault or crafted alts and friends to give you a kickstart on any future characters.

Necklace

A special mention to Woe of the Willow for a nice necklace. While not teal it’s easily gotten from a Tier 1 run.

Offhand and Class Item

For these we can be short in it’s discussion. It’s either crafted or quest drops. For main hand you can barter a good weapon from the (CD or Rift??).

A special mention to Sarn Vorn for bows, off hands and shields. Each boss drops a different class item, but these are some of the best stats you can find for yours.

Wraith and Nazguls

Unless you’re on a higher landscape difficulty setting. Gearing with Wraiths in mind is mostly about going for higher morale and tactical mitigations. Classes with healing or higher stats will have a far easier time soloing these guys. If you’ve issues with them (while leveling) there are a few extra tips.

  • You can run away. They will despawn after 10 minutes.
  • Having a second traitline that is focussed on tanking. Blue warden, yellow captain, blue bear.
  • Check a friend for a quick upgrade with crafted gear. Or quest in Before the Shadow or Angle of Methethal for better armour compared to other leveling regions.
  • Remember to remove corruptions
  • Be mindfull about group pulls or groups with elites. Killing a bunch of swarm mobs while having an elite might spell doom if a Mourning Wraith spawns.

For level 50, there are specialty jewelry in purple or teal to barter in Esteldin. These provide 1-3 hope, decent stats (some healing even) and shadow mitigations. For normal day use you’ll lose some stats. They do function well in the Rift. Purple is plenty cheaper and only a slight loss in normal stats. Purple and teal set bonus do work together. Getting 2 purple to replace one later with teal can work. They are bind to account for a second character.AD 4nXfjMyiio8Z89hLJaVSxkrWlyEjqjs8aMzvtQHf4WqPeLUIuuLZl4o0zzoMAHuQ8I2XuiWAVrmQW 5iDTod TtH hlz17tuj964GMduZ E0NT0fq8Ew81xYjU0 rshmYqOZ98hVAhuf6uSCIKkx VOn59WSD?key=2sNlG3rKow2 L30dTi6SvA

Barter locations

The servers have brought in plenty of new and returning players. Some might not be aware of all the locations and places around Middle-Earth where you can find all the goodies. Below you’ll see each locations described for the gear from above paragraphs.
Links provided to Lotro wiki articles about the place and systems attached. Not all information is correct for the Legendary level 50 servers though.

Skirmish camp

Each major city has a Skirmish camp. The most convenient one is just outside Bree Southgate. Select the level 50 selection to barter with marks and medallions. Classic and crafting barterers are functionally disabled.

Armour

Heavy, Medium and Light armour available. No class or set bonuses.

For a Cloak, see Jewellery and cloak.

Jewellery

Bad selection of stats, but Jewellery and cloak has every slot in theory.

Other

Weapons available on Weapons (hobbit underneath a ten). No shields though

Delving

Nearly all mission camps have a delving barterer available. Expensive gear, but nice selection for all class roles, teal and 2 essence slots if you want.

Crafted

Crafting is once again usefull. Ranging from slightly better then the skirmish camp to the best available without going into any instance. The crafts come in 3 gradations. Always available recipes or bought from a vendor (Standard), recipes from scroll cases (mobs) in a permanent recipe (hope tokens) or single use recipe (Rare) or Guild (guaranteed craft, but with cooldowns).

Standard

These are the “Always available recipes or bought from a vendor”. They are in all level ranges, but the once for this guide are the Level 45. Quality greatly varies among all craft, but they really easy and cheap to get a whole set off.

Rare

Consumables are permanent recipes (scrolls, hope tokens, food etc), but the others are single use recipes. They are level 48+ and usually great. Difficulty comes in finding them and the beryl shards required in the recipes. They come from Rare signature mobs roaming the landscape or rare drops from gathering.

Great for single slots such as weapons, offhand, necklace. Gets a bit more time consuming if you want to gear a full character.

Guild

No single use recipes, great to best gear. But limited by the usage of an Guild item that has a 7 day cooldown. Also need max reputation for the level 50 gear. Find a friend or work on your own crafters over time for these guys.

Level 50 quest

Don’t forget your questing rewards. Especially the epic story gives some great rewards such as cloak, pocket and weapons. You will want to look at later regions and level 50 quests, but you’ll find plenty of options out there.

Scaled instance

Greater dextrous helmet of penetration. Not the easiest to find or even the best anymore. These have been artificially lowered to be worse then the “endgame” or crafted gear. And mostly these are Bind on equip. The teal versions that are ok to decent. These come from older instance clusters such as

  • Great Barrows
  • Fornost
  • Annuminas
  • School and Library of Tham Midrain
  • Halls of Night and Inn of the Forsaken
  • Helegrod (broken instance loot)
Great Barrow and School are usually run the most and are available in Delving variants aswell to get those weeklies done.

New Scaled instance

New refers to them being released in the lifespan of Lotro under a different style of scaling gear. Making them superior then the classic instance loot. Each boss has a certain slot they usually drop with a wider range of available stats. Not having a lower item level helps out aswell, but without a Tier 2+ available the teal options are hard to find. And even yellow gear is there (not that great).
  • Sarch Vorn (6-man with great offhands)
  • Woe of the Willow (3-man with great necklace)
  • Agoroth (3-man)

Annuminas barter

Great barter armour available for marks and medaillions without any special tokens or drops needed. Can be reached from Tinnudir by stablemaster. Or take the boat to Men Erain from Tinnudir. A walk through the city is needed, but at 50 most mobs are grey.

Angmar

The original last area of the expansion that level 50 had to offer. These were home to the instance cluster Urugarth, Carn Dum, Barad Gularan and the raid Rift. You will need to have finished https://lotro-wiki.com/wiki/Category:Vol._I._Book_6_Quests to reach this camp.

Angmar instance

The above questchain will lead you into camp of Garth Forthnir. At the first passage you will find the below barters. They each require a drop from a specific boss in the Angmar instance cluster.

To unlock the instance Carn Dum you’ll need to finishhttps://lotro-wiki.com/wiki/Category:Vol._I._Book_7_Quests Or join a group where the leader has done this.

Mission barter

Short form instance for solo or duo across Middle-Earth. Each with their own specific slots, rep and weeklies. Some of the easiest (with some work) to get good jewellery. Some armour available, but usually easier options available. Read notes in their own section.

Take special note of the Blue dwarf stables that will allow you to teleport between most of these locations (southwest Bree or Midsummer Minas Tirith)
